Asa Dotzler, a coordinator of Mozilla project visited Korea for speaking in SW Insight 2005 happened at the COEX in Seoul Korea, from Dec. 1 – 4, 2005. This annual event is Korea’s biggest IT exposition that showcases software development in all sectors of the industry. Last Dec. 2, we has the Linux Desktop Conference hosted by KIPA and the MIC. The conference happened at the COEX Ballroom and we had around 200 people in attendance which is pretty good.
In this conference, Asa Dotzler discussed why Linux is not yet ready for the desktop and how it can happen, citing the case study of Firefox. Although he had gotten a chance to speak it at OSCON 2005, his address is very exciting and powerful to all attendances. During lunch, the organizer held a press conference at the Biz Baz restaurant inside the COEX with members of the Korean IT Press from The Electronic Times, iNews 24, and The Digital Times. Asa explained Firefox’s success story and future plan to them. After the presentations, all the speakers were put into action with a panel discussion moderated by Mookyeong Yang of C|Net Korea. The general consensus was that Linux is ready for the desktop and Korea can make it possible and lead the way for that effort.
From Dec. 5 to 6, He gave a speech for Firefox’s developement and future plan in NHN and Daum Communications, the owner US based Lycos.com. Both companies have korean top portal site Naver.com and Daum.net. Firefox 1.5 korean version included both site’s search plugin because they have top market share in korean search over 90%.
